Comme j’avais du temps de libre cette année j’ai décidé d’assister à mon premier Games Day, à Paris !
L’endroit : L’Espace Paris-Est à Montreuil est un genre d’horrible blockhaus, on se croirait en Allemagne de l’Est, outre le brouhahah ambiant et l’odeur de sueur, les toilettes étaient hors-service et il n’y avait aucune poubelle. Pas de décorations non plus, qui auraient égayé un peu tout ça, juste une paire de bannières avec les logos de Warhammer et 40k deci-delà et une vidéo commerciale qui crachait en boucle toute seule dans son coin. Les nécrons sont sortis, waow !
As i had some free time for that this year i decided to attend to my first Games Day, in Paris!
The place: The Espace Paris-Est in Montreuil is an horrid bunker-like contraption straight out of Eastern Germany, it was noisy and stank of sweat, the toilets were out of order and there was no bin to be found. No decorations whatsoever, to liven up the place a bit, only two or three banners with the warhammer or 40k logos and a loud commercial video that looped alone in a corner. Necrons are out, waow !

L’évènement : Les tables de jeu étaient serrées dans deux coins de l’Espace ce qui permettait une bonne circulation dans le grand espace vide au milieu. Un sacré attroupement autour des vitrines du Golden Daemon et j’ai dû jouer des coudes afin de pouvoir avoir un aperçu des figurines cachées derrière un plexi-glass sale sur des stands bas et mal éclairés. Il y avait des auteurs et artistes de GW/FW, mais aucune grosse pointure. Je ne suis pas allé les ennuyer, n’ayant rien de spécial à leur dire.
The event: Gaming tables were bunched in the corners yet i could navigate easily because there was a lot of empty space in the middle. People were bunched around the golden daemon stand and I had to push my way in order to get a glimpse at the miniatures hidden on a low and dark stand behind a dirty sheet of plexi-glass. There were GW/FW artists and authors but none i could recognize. I didn’t try to bother them cos’ i didn’t know what to tell them.
La boutique : était énorme ! Comme je ne suis pas arrivé avant midi il n’y avait pas la queue, le personnel était très attentionné et j’ai pris pas mal de bouquins sur le stand Black Library, la figurine exclusive ainsi qu’une paire d’enforcers impériaux de FW. L’un d’eux a un petit problème de moulage mais ce n’est pas bien grave car j’en voulais un deuxième pour une conversion.
The shop: was huge ! As i didn’t come before midday there was no queue, the staff was helpful, i grabbed quite a few books from Black Library, the event-only miniature as well as a pair of FW Imperial enforcers. One of them is slightly miscast but it’s no biggie as i wanted a second one for converting purposes.

Les tables : étaient intéressantes. J’ai vu une très jolie tour elfe noire défendue contre des zombies marins et autres crabes géants (coucou aux gars de Rennes!) et un duel d’aviation SM et Ork façon Pearl Harbor. La pyramide de Lustrie était immense mais très grossière, je ne mettrai pas de photo ici vu qu’empiler des dalles de polystryrène est à la portée de tout le monde.
The tables: were interesting. I saw a very nice dark elf tower defending against sea zombies and giant crabs and a pearl harbor-style duel between SM and Ork aircrafts. The Lustria pyramid was huge but very rough, i won’t show it here as anybody can pile slabs of polystyrene.
Something impressive at last, an aircraft fight featuring space marines vs orks over an imperial harbour, complete with battleships and all !
Finalement !: La magie était absente. Je ne peux pas dire que je me sois fait chier, mais je n’ai pas été très impressionné non plus. Les entrées du Golden Daemon étaient dans une vitrine sombre et surpeuplée, comme je l’ai déjà dit, alors que le stand FW était bien placé mais ne montrait rien de franchement exclusif, j’ai joué un peu avec le Fellblade et j’ai vu en vrai des trucs déjà vus sur le net
Le personnel (oui, vous les tshirts rouges) a été très, très sympa, très diligent et ça ça fait plaisir. Quand aux visiteurs c’est toujours sympa de se retrouver entre passionnés. Une dernière râle : Il n’y avait pas de diorama ! Tous les ans je voyais les photos des fameux dioramas du Games Day dans White Dwarf, j’en ai même vu quelques uns à Nottingham, j’avais vu des photos et une vidéo du diorama d’Istvaan III du GD anglais de cette année et m’attendais, peut-être, à le voir à Montreuil ; en fait, c’est la première chose que j’ai cherché en entrant : « Ok, j’y suis, où est le diorama ? » Après deux rapides tours du hall je suis passé à autre chose et ai essayé de trouver d’autres trucs intéressants à voir. C’était le dernier Games Day de l’année et Games Workshop n’avait peut être plus rien à sortir de sa manche. Je suis arrivé à midi, à 15h j’étais dans le métro du retour, les bras pleins de bouquins et des figurines plein les poches. Je l’ai fait, c’est cool. Je ne chercherai pas à savoir combien ça m’aurait coûté sur Ebay et Amazon.
Finally !: The magic was absent. I can’t say that i was really bored, but i wasn’t really impressed either. The golden daemon entries, as i said before, were crowded and dark, whereas the FW stand was well lit but featured nothing brand new, i got to play a bit with the Fellblade and saw for real stuff i had seen on the net. The staff (yes you red shirts) was really kind and helpful, which is great. As tothe attendants, it’s always a pleasure to mix with other gaming nuts.
A last rant: There was no bloody diorama ! Every year i saw photos of the famed Games Day Dioramas in White Dwarf, i even saw some of them in Nottingham, i had seen photos and a video of this year’s english GD Istvaan III diorama and expected to see it, maybe, in Montreuil; actually it’s the first thing i looked for when i arrived: « Ok, i’m here, where’s the diorama ? » After two quick turns around the hall i carried on and tried to find other interesting things to look at. It was the last Games Day of the year and maybe Games Workshop had nothign else to get out of their sleeves. I arrived at midday and at 3pm i was in the subway back home, arms full of books and pockets crammed with miniatures. I did it, that’s cool. I won’t try to find out how much it would have costed me on Ebay and Amazon.
